Disease Resistant Blight Resistant Tomato Varieties for 2022

Disease Resistant Tomatoes

Preamble: 40 years ago, the first thing you wanted to know about Tomato seeds, plants for sale, etc., was the Disease Resistance of the Tomato. There are 120 Disease Resistant Tomato Varieties on this page; this list was begun after being frustrated by the poor results in the search engines. After too much time feeling like the "Information Web" had devolved into the "Transaction Rabbit-Hole", Tomatoes Resistant To Disease was born. Also, the wholesale plant growers represented in local nurseries no longer have the "VFT, VFFNT," etc. on the Tomato Plant tags. This list is consumer frustration turned to positive action.

This list has Beefsteaks, Cherries, Clusters, Tresses, Cocktail Tomatoes, all moderately to very highly *Disease Resistant*. There is no such thing as a Disease-Proof Tomato, bad weather, Spider Mites, etc., can create conditions that overcome the resistant genes. But the Tomatoes on this page are stronger genetically. A new friend of ours, who sells Tomatoes at the local Farmers Market, said: "We've stopped growing Heirlooms, they are so fragile. They're just too fragile and they collapse."

Most or nearly all of the Tomatoes on this page are not "fragile". Like the page title says, "Disease Resistant Blight Resistant Tomato Varieties for 2022".

The tomato resistance genes are Ph-1, Ph-2, Ph-3, and Ph-5. Another, Ph-4, was identified in Asia. These were derived from Solanum pimpinellifolium, a wild relative of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). These genes are effective against some genotypes but not others. Ph-1 is not effective against the main genotype found recently in the United States (US-23). Ph-2 and Ph-3 are the main genes being conventionally bred into hybrids, singly or in pairs. Using pairs with either different genes (e.g. Ph-2 and Ph-3) or two copies of the same gene are strategies to achieve higher levels of resistance. A variety having one copy of a gene is heterozygous, while a hybrid with a copy from each parent is homozygous. Additionally, there is a new resistance gene (Ph-5) as well as unidentified resistance genes in older varieties, heirlooms, and wild types. Varieties with Ph-2 and Ph-3 exhibited the best suppression in recent evaluations (2012 and 2013) with US-23, the most common genotype in the Eastern United States. Varieties with just Ph-3 exhibited good suppression. While the resistance conferred by Ph-2 and Ph-3 was very good, the plants were not immune; thus some symptoms—albeit very few—were seen on leaves and fruit under high disease pressure.

Diseases: ASC (Aal) = Alternaria stem canker (Alternariaalternata f. sp. lycopersici); CRR (Pl) = Corky root rot (Pyrenochaeta lycopersici); Fol = Fusarium wilt races 1, 2, and 3, respectively (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp.lycopersici); For = Fusarium crown and root rot (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis lycopersici); GLS = Gray leaf spot (Stemphylium botryosum f. sp. lycopersici = Sbl; S. lycopersici = Sl; S. solani = Ss); LM = Leaf mold (Ff) races A to E (now Passalora fulva [syn. Fulvia fulva]); Lt = Powdery Mildew (Leveillula taurica); On= Powdery Mildew (Oidiumneolycopersici); Bacterial Speck (Pst) (Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato races 0 and 1; N = Root-knot nematode (3 = three species, Meloidogyne arenaria (Peanut RKN), M. incognita (Southern RKN),and M. javanica (Javanese RKN) (Mi-1 gene covers most, but not for resistance to the Northern root-knot nematode = M. hapla, which is most common in the NE); V = Verticillium wilt (Vd-1Verticillium dahliae [also Va, Verticillium albo-atrum]); TMV = Tobacco mosaic virus; ToMV = Tomato mosaic virus (both seed and mechanical); TSWV= Tomato spotted wilt virus (Thrips); Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (Whiteflies)
